How buying OEM service parts can save you time and money

A ship at sea
When it comes to servicing your company’s machinery, it can be all too tempting to opt for cheaper, third-party, non-ABB sourced turbocharger parts. Although it can lower your initial capital expenditure costs, there are also risks to consider, as well as additional costs further down the line.

We’ve already looked at how balancing CapEx and Opex costs can save your company money in the long run, but a service agreement isn’t the only way to lower your overall costs. Opting for OEM service parts is another key area that can return increased reliability and reduce long-term costs.

When it comes to servicing your company’s machinery, it can be all too tempting to opt for cheaper, third-party, non-ABB sourced turbocharger parts. Although it can lower your initial capital expenditure costs, there are also risks to consider, as well as additional costs further down the line.

In the video below, Julian Withers, Regional Technical Manager, ABB Turbocharging, UK, explains just how customers can be caught out when purchasing out-of-spec parts.

Not only can third-party parts be constructed from lower-grade materials, Julian also highlights more sinister aspects of the industry, including the cosmetic spraying of parts to hide wear and tear, which can result in premature failure or even injury. At best, you’ll also be looking at the cost of replacement parts, and potentially much larger costs for unplanned downtime.

Corrosion in third-party parts is another issue highlighted by Julian, with potential load cycle fatigue likely to cause turbocharger failure, engine damage and yet more unplanned downtime.

Add in out-of-balance or worn parts, including turbine shafts, turbine blades and nozzle rings built to incorrect specifications, and it’s easy to see just how much can go wrong when buying third-party parts. Millimetres matter, and even the smallest variation in tolerances can result in premature failure.

If running your business efficiently matters to you, the benefits of buying OEM service parts are easy to see.
