Turbocharging sustainability in shipping: The value of digitalization and collaboration

Accelleron brought a panel of industry experts together in London to discuss sustainability and the path to net zero. We find out how digitalization and collaboration can help.

Sustainability and the path to net zero are hugely important topics in shipping, which is why Accelleron brought a panel of industry experts together in London to discuss how companies can work together to make a difference.

We’ve already looked at the opening topics from the presentation, including sustainability and decarbonization in shipping, along with the ways that turbocharger technology and TPL upgrades can make a positive impact, and now it’s time to discover the value of digitalization and collaboration.

Pascal Reolon, Accelleron’s Tekomar Software Product Lifecycle Manager, began his presentation by discussing the Tekomar engine module. “The Tekomar XPERT engine module was developed to offer actionable advice for engine performance optimization,” Reolon explained.

“It’s been a big success. We have installed it on 2,000 vessels, equipping more than 6,000 engines. The engine module improves fuel efficiency by 2%, which may not sound like a lot, but on a medium sized container vessel we’re talking about one tonne of fuel which can be saved per day.

“If this is applied consistently throughout the entire fleet, which we can facilitate through the Tekomar Xpert Dashboard, then substantial emission reductions will result.”

Reolon went on to discuss the leading factors in unnecessary fuel consumption, such as the condition of a ship’s hull or propeller, and the fact that it can be difficult to identify issues primarily because they develop slowly over time.

The experience is akin to riding a bike, Reolon explained, where conditions on any given day will never be the same. There may be more wind. There may be snow. The journey may include carrying luggage, and almost inevitably parts will start to wear out over time. This means the effort required to arrive at the office via bike will never be the same, but it can be incredibly tricky working out why there are differences.

This is where digitalization and Tekomar comes in, and Reolon took the opportunity to introduce the new Tekomar XPERT Hull & Propeller module to the audience, explaining how the module is capable of including external factors, such as wind and weather, in its measurements.

Through subtracting external factors, it’s far easier to identify poor performance and the reasons behind it, and the Tekomar XPERT Hull & Propeller module also delivers actionable insights to remedy issues, helping ship owners and operators to improve efficiency, drastically cut emissions and save fuel costs across their entire fleets.

Roleon wrapped up his talk by adding: “I am convinced this will change the way that the shipping industry manages its emissions.”

How collaboration is key to meeting emissions targets

While solutions such as Tekomar XPERT can make a huge difference towards improving efficiency and cutting emissions, collaboration is key if the maritime industry intends to meet stringent targets.

Mauro de Micheli, Global Head of Sales, Operations and Partnerships at Accelleron, was the last of our panel of experts to give a presentation, discussing the difference that collaboration can make.

“I was very excited when I knew we were going to have this event here in this beautiful location, because I am very passionate about history. And this is a place where you can really feel and breathe the history,” de Micheli explained.

“Therefore, I decided to start the session with a quote from a historical character, and that’s Charles Darwin. In the long history of humankind (and animal kind, too), those who learned to collaborate and improvise most effectively have prevailed.”

De Micheli went on to use music as an example to highlight his point. “I always found it amazing when you’re playing in a band; how the different components can be coordinated between band members.

“Normally in a band, people bring the best of their experiences, and they put it together using the experience of other members of the band, up to a level where they sound as just one instrument. And this is possible only because people are intensively collaborating.”

“This is exactly the way we interpret collaboration at ABB Turbocharging [Accelleron]. We also want to bring the best of our capabilities in engineering, in digitalization, and combine that experience with the top capabilities of our partners… Together, we want to create and deliver a superior customer experience. So, we are firm believers of cooperation.”

Alliances will be required to tackle these complex problems, de Micheli concluded, to enable decarbonisation in shaping, along with pointing out the benefits of working closely with partners when it comes to digitalization.
